A Poetic Announcement With Artistic Roots

The casting news was officially revealed on Wednesday (Jan. 14) through the production’s newly launched Instagram account, confirming that Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey will lead a fresh stage production of Sondheim’s iconic work.

Just hours earlier, the pair teased fans with a subtle but meaningful post of their own: a photo taken from behind as they sat together inside the Art Institute of Chicago, gazing at Georges Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte—the very painting that inspired the musical. Their shared caption, “All it has to be is good,” echoed a lyric from the show’s title song, sending theater lovers into a frenzy.

What We Know About the Revival

According to Deadline, the revival is expected to open in the summer of 2027 at London’s renowned Barbican Theatre. The production will be directed by Marianne Elliott, who previously worked with Bailey on the acclaimed 2018 West End revival of Company.

A Milestone Moment for Grande

While this marks Grande’s West End debut, the stage is hardly new territory for her. She began her career at just 13 years old in the 13 on Broadway and later showcased her theatrical chops as Penny in NBC’s Hairspray Live!.

Her recent return to acting through Wicked—directed by Jon M. Chu—reignited her passion for the craft. Grande’s portrayal of Glinda even earned her her first Oscar nomination, while Bailey starred as Fiyero. She has since spoken openly about wanting to focus more on acting and theater, hinting that fans may see less frequent pop releases in the future.

From Screen to Stage Once More

Bailey, widely loved for his role in Bridgerton, now joins Grande in what promises to be one of the most anticipated West End revivals in years. With Sondheim’s timeless score, a visionary director, and two stars at pivotal moments in their careers, this production is shaping up to be something truly special.
